This year Threatened Species Week celebrates Queensland’s conservation successes highlighted through the internet with the theme "Threatened Species Week: On-line to Recovery". This year's theme is especially relevant as Queensland commemorates Q150, recognising 150 years of independence, which is a time to reflect on the state’s achievements.
Queensland’s threatened species continue to face ongoing pressures and challenges to their survival. However, through the hard work of a range of partners there have been positive steps forward for a number of threatened species, and information about them can be found on-line using the links below.
Wildlife on the Web
The internet is a useful tool to find information on almost any subject, and for wildlife this is no different. Some useful places to start looking for information on wildlife and conservation are:
- Nature conservation in Queensland
- An A-Z of plants and animals
- Endangered plants
- Wildlife Online, which enables you to access lists of plants and animals from the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s wildlife database
- “The Move” – the blog that follows the progress of the first re-introduction of the northern hairy-nosed wombat
- The Recovery Action Database (or RAD) – Watch this Space. In the near future, this on-line database will allow anyone to search for information and actions on Queensland’s threatened species.

Conservation Successes
After years of dedicated work the single population of northern hairy-nosed wombat has increased to approximately 138 individuals. To prevent this single population being wiped out by a catastrophe, the first re-introduction for the species was carried out this year to try and establish a second population.
It was only recently that the cave fern as down to only 46 plants in the wild. But current actions are working to boost the population using planted ferns and spores dispersed from ferns grown in a nursery.
Once hunted to the brink of extinction, humpback whales have now recovered to about 98% of their estimated population before whaling, and continue to increase in number.
Similarly, populations of green turtles and loggerhead turtles are also on the increase since commercial harvest of green turtles was stopped and turtle excluder devices were introduced into the trawl fisheries of northern and eastern Australia.
And there are a range of ongoing management activities that continue to help a number of species including the bilby, bridled nailtail wallaby, cassowary, crocodiles, eastern bristlebird, Hastings River mouse, Julia Creek dunnart, koala, mahogany glider, and platypus.
