Environment and Resource Management

Rare

The rare category has been phased out of the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

Species listed as rare are being progressively reviewed to determine which of the new categories most adequately describe their status.

All rare species that are still to be reviewed have been transferred to the near threatened category as an interim measure until such time as they can be properly assessed and assigned a new wildlife category.

The transfer of rare species to the near threatened category will not change the management of these species, as the management arrangements for rare species and near threatened species are consistent.
