Koala habitat programs
Targeted action—financial incentives
The Queensland Government has targeted programs to ensure that immediate action is taken in areas where koala populations are under the most serious threat.
A range of financial incentives have been introduced encouraging private landholders to take action and personally contribute to protecting koalas in South East Queensland.
Eligible landholders are provided the opportunity to apply for financial assistance to revegetate, rehabilitate and manage koala habitat on their land in koala protection areas in South East Queensland through DERM's Koala nature refuges program.
The Queensland Government is also seeking expressions of interest from landholders who may wish to sell their property to the Queensland Government to become an area protected for koala conservation through the Koala Habitat, Protection and Rehabilitation Plan.
Koala Habitat, Protection and Rehabilitation Plan
The Queensland Government is seeking to purchase, at a fair market price, properties identified by the Koala Response Strategy as high to medium value for rehabilitation of koala habitat. These areas will be rehabilitated and protected in perpetuity to complement other areas protected for koalas.
What properties are the Queensland Government interested in purchasing for koala habitat restoration?
The Queensland Government has developed maps of existing koala bushland habitat and areas suitable for rehabilitation. To be eligible, part or all of your property must be mapped as high or medium value, suitable for rehabilitation. To find out if your property is eligible, you can search by lot or plan or contact DERM on the details below with the Lot on Plan description of your property (e.g. Lot 1 on RP12345), which can be found on your rates notice or title documents.
How do I find out more about the possibility of selling my property to the Queensland Government under the Koala Habitat, Protection and Rehabilitation Plan?
If a land holder is interested in selling their property an electronic expression of interest form (PDF, 183K)* should be submitted. Alternatively call the numbers below for a copy of the expression of interest to be posted.
While there is no closing date for submitting an expression of interest, they should be completed and lodged as soon as possible to be considered for funding. Late expressions of interest may not be considered until the next financial year.
What happens next?
Once an expression of interest form has been received, it will be assessed to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria. If it does, the applicant will be contacted to arrange a time to discuss the expression of interest in more detail.
What will happen to my land after I sell it?
Once purchased, the land will be rehabilitated and protected in perpetuity to complement other areas protected for koalas. This means that your property will become part of a lasting legacy for koalas in South East Queensland.
