Biodiversity Action Plans are developed using 'Back on Track species prioritisation framework' results. Workshops are held at the regional level with consultation obtained from a range of stakeholders and partners, who determine regional threats impacting on biodiversity and develop actions to address these threats.

'Back on Track' Biodiversity Action Plans provide a framework to direct management and research, as well as a strategic approach to address threats to species recovery. Priority threatened species for the region are identified so that resources for conservation and management effort can be focussed and effective.

The Action Plan is intended as a strategic tool to guide planning and investment within the region on regional biodiversity issues and in particular priority species. It contains proposed actions for the regional group to consider (or encourage others to consider, in partnership with the regional group) for focussing on-ground action, planning, monitoring and research and community engagement where it will be most effective in working to achieve species conservation.

Apart from using it as a tool for helping make decisions about planning and targeting existing or new works, the Action Plan can also work to leverage extra funding from a range of sources. Using Action Plans may facilitate partnerships to allow for a more coordinated and therefore effective approach to addressing threats within the region.
