Northern Brigalow Belt
Priorities for remnant vegetation protection (project no: NHT972132)
Project summary

The project Northern Brigalow Belt - Priorities for Remnant Vegetation Protection (Project No: NHT 972132) was undertaken during the two-year period May 1999 - June 2001. The purpose was to determine the relative values of areas of remnant bushland and wetlands; encourage community and landholder awareness and support for changes of land use to conserve biodiversity; and to identify priority projects for on-ground works under the Natural Heritage Trust.
The project had the following operational objectives:
- Assess terrestrial regional ecosystems, to identify priority areas for on-ground action.
- Identify areas of regional significance for nature conservation.
- Document potential Ramsar sites (wetlands that are listed as internationally significant under the Ramsar convention), prepare listings for the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia, and develop a regional geographic information system (GIS) for the national wetland inventory.
- Develop a biodiversity strategy in consultation with community stakeholders.
- Identify and prioritise on-ground community and state agency actions to implement key elements of the biodiversity strategy for the region.
