Planting for wildlife
Would you like a garden that is low-maintenance but attracts lots of interesting native animals at the same time? Plant native species!
Planting local native species can:
- Provide food and shelter for native animals, many of which are struggling to survive as native bushland is cleared.
- Reduce traffic noise and dust in your home.
- Bring the added bonus of birdsong into your life.
- Help reduce insect pests.
- Provide hours of pleasure watching, painting and photographing native animals and plants.
You can attract birds, flying-foxes, lizards, possums and butterflies into your backyard. Imagine how much your children or grandchildren will enjoy sharing the backyard with these fascinating creatures!
When planting for wildlife:
- Plant local species which require less maintenance and provide food for local animals.
- Plant a mixture of trees, shrubs and ground covers rather than the same species or a single tree.
- Avoid using chemicals or insecticides.
- Plant things that flower or fruit to attract nectar-eating and fruit-eating animals.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service can provide advice on which plants suit local animals.
