Guidelines for the Waterwise Councils Package
Introduction
These guidelines have been developed to assist Queensland councils access and use the Waterwise Councils Package (package). Developed by the Department of Environment and Resource Management (the department), the package comprises a suite of resources to support community awareness and education about water conservation and water efficiency.
Background
The sustainable use of Queensland's natural resources is an important issue, especially during this time of rapid population growth and changing climate. We are all responsible for conserving and using water wisely. To protect this precious resource now and for future generations, it is necessary to create long-term change in community attitudes and behaviours regarding efficient water use throughout Queensland.
Local governments have an important role to play in raising community awareness about the need to conserve water and to provide solutions for how to use the water we have in a sustainable manner. This will help to ensure a reliable water supply for the future, minimising the need for new and alternative water infrastructure.
Resources
The resources in the package have been developed in response to the information needs identified by Queensland councils. Feedback from council representatives has informed the content and design of the materials.
The package comprises:
- Activity sheets for children

Using the resources
While the local community is the primary target audience for most of the resources in the package, some of the resources aim to assist accommodation operators.
There are many options available to councils for using and distributing the materials (PDF, 37K)*. Some of these have been listed in a table. This list is not exhaustive and councils are encouraged to develop additional distribution options relevant to their local community.
Co-branding
Councils have the option to co-brand the Waterwise resources. This means they are able to have their logo inserted into the product design.
If councils do not wish to co-brand the materials they are free to download the print-ready files and arrange print runs to suit their needs. Councils are asked to complete an on-line contact details form prior to downloading the materials.
Councils wishing to co-brand any of the resources are required to complete and lodge a co-branding agreement. To do this follow steps below:
- Print 2 copies of the Waterwise Councils Co-branding Deed (PDF, 96K)*.
- Read the deed and proceed with the steps below if you agree to its terms.
- On both copies of the deed:
- complete the date information on page 3
- complete the required information where indicated in Schedule 1, pages 12 and 13

- Print a list of the package materials you wish to co-brand onto 2 separate A4 sheets. Attach 1 of these to each copy of the Waterwise Councils Co-branding Deed as Attachment 2.
- Send both copies of the completed Waterwise Councils Co-branding Deed—including attachments 1 and 2— to the departmental contact provided on page 12 of the deed.
- Upon receipt, the departmental contact officer will complete the deed, finalising the arrangement. One of the completed copies will be returned to your council contact provided on page 13 of the deed.
- At this point, a request will be made to your council contact for the necessary electronic versions of your council logo.
- Upon receipt, your logo will be placed on the products identified in Attachment 2 of the Waterwise Councils Co-branding Deed and these will be forwarded on a CD via post unless otherwise requested.
