Recycled water providers
Under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 (The Act), a recycled water provider is an entity that owns infrastructure for the production and supply of recycled water or another entity, prescribed under a regulation, that owns infrastructure for the supply of recycled water.
Providers are responsible for the overall management and quality of water produced by their recycled water scheme and must comply with the provisions of the new legislation. This legislation applies to providers who are producing and supplying recycled water that is sourced from:
- sewage or effluent from a service provider’s infrastructure
- greywater from a large treatment plant capable of producing 50 kilolitres or more of greywater per day
- wastewater from industrial, commercial, manufacturing or animal husbandry activities prescribed under the regulation (but not from mining or petroleum or other agricultural activities), where it is sold or transferred, unless it is a related entity.
Providers' obligations
Before beginning or continuing to supply recycled water after 1 July 2008, providers must either:
- have a recycled water management plan (RWMP) approved by the regulator
- have an exemption from submitting a RWMP granted by the regulator; or
- be covered by transitional arrangements.
