How water is monitored
Accurate data on the quality and quantity of the state's fresh water resources is required to support water resource planning and water management activities. To collect this data, the department operates and maintains networks across the state to monitor:
- quantity and quality of surface water (PDF, 421K)*
- groundwater quantity (PDF, 411K)*
- groundwater quality (PDF, 490K)*
- sediment transport
- aquatic ecology.
Stream gauging stations
Access data from the Stream Gauging Stations Index using either of the following:
- stream name (PDF, 478K)*
- gauging station number (PDF, 454K)* .
Data collection and reporting standards
The water monitoring program operates under a certified quality management system to ensure public confidence in the data and in the department’s water planning and management programs.
To ensure consistent data collection and management to an agreed minimum standard, monitoring is conducted according to standards which apply to:
- all water resource monitoring in Queensland required under the Water Act 2000
- any subordinate legislation (e.g. water resource plans)
- The department policy.
Water monitoring data collection standards (PDF, 256K)* .
The Water monitoring data reporting standards (PDF, 238K)* define how a water scheme operator transfers monitoring data to the department as part of a monitoring program.
