Forest practice survey
- Why is the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) conducting the survey?
- What does the survey involve?
- How will the information be used?
The forest practice survey will review the implementation and effectiveness of the Code applying to a native forest practice on freehold land (PDF, 160K)* (the code) which was introduced in 2005.
A selection of landholders will be invited to participate in the survey which will be conducted between June and September 2010.
Why is the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) conducting the survey?
It is common practice to look at how a code is being implemented a few years after being introduced. The code was introduced in 2005 and supported by a field guide and a series of training sessions across the State.
Now that landholders have had several years of operating under the code, DERM is seeking feedback on how landholders have found the code, the field guide and associated training.
The survey of how the code has been implemented with focus being on:
- raising awareness through education of native forest practice requirements
- discussing how forest practice activities have been implemented in accordance with the code.
What does the survey involve?
DERM is gathering information to report on:
- the level of understanding of the forest practice code
- the extent and nature of forest practice activity
- how well the code is being followed.
Not all landholders who have notified DERM of a native forest practice will be asked to participate in the survey—properties involved will be selected randomly. DERM will contact landholders directly to request their permission to conduct a ground survey on their property.
A remote and/or ground survey will be conducted to identify if any forest practice activity has been undertaken and how well the activity complies with the code. The remote survey will be undertaken using aerial photography and satellite imagery, while a field visit will be conducted for the ground survey. Landholders will be provided with a report on the survey findings for their property.
How will the information be used?
As part of an improvement process, the information gathered from this survey will assist DERM to understand the extent and nature of native forest practice activity and how landholders are implementing the code. In addition, the information will assist DERM to determine the effectiveness of the field guide and associated training, identifying any areas of improvement.
The information collected by DERM will be used in accordance with the department’s Information Privacy Plan.
