SLATS land cover change reports
The Land cover change in Queensland 2007–08 report (PDF, 2.5M)* provides statistics on tree clearing rates in Queensland and covers the first full annual period since the Queensland Government ended broadscale remnant clearing on 31 December 2006.
The 2007–08 figures represent the lowest annual rate of clearing since the Statewide Land Cover and Trees Study began in 1988.
Clearing rates for the 2007–08 period were 123 000 hectares per year (ha/yr), down from 235 000 ha/yr—a 48 per cent decrease from the previous year.
The reduction in clearing of remnant vegetation coincides with the end of broadscale clearing on 31 December 2006 under the government’s vegetation management laws.
The Analysis of vegetation clearing rates in Queensland report (PDF, 138K)* provides a breakdown of all clearing trends identified in the Land cover change in Queensland 2007–08 report.
The government’s commitment to end broadscale clearing in 2003 included a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from clearing by 20 to 25 mega tonnes per year.
The rate of emissions from clearing shown in the analysis report is a reduction of more than 36 mega tonnes per year compared to the rates when the commitment was made.
The analysis suggests that the majority of the reported clearing was likely to be for routine exempt management activities including clearing for fire breaks, fencing, roads and infrastructure, and for permitted activities such as fodder harvesting.
