State of the Rivers

Mary River

Location map of the Mary River catchment. The study area encompasses the Mary River and its tributaries—a catchment area of 9700 km2. The river originates in the Conondale Range and flows northward for  255 km to Maryborough, then north-east towards the coast. The Tagigan, Beenham, Wapunga and Blackall ranges form the eastern watershed. The western watershed is formed by the Kandanga, Amamoor and Coast ranges.

Large tributaries draining into the Mary River are Munna Creek, Tinana Creek, Wide Bay Creek, Yabba Creek, Six Mile Creek and Obi Obi Creek. Within the basin are a number of storages and weirs that provide both irrigation and urban water supplies.

Within the catchment area, 166 subsections were identified, of which 164 were surveyed. Within them, 244 ‘full survey’ and two ‘photograph only’ sites were recorded..
