Verification and editing
Verification and editing involves expert knowledge, field checking and editing of land use polygons to annotate and enhance draft maps. Regional officers of the department, other state agencies, natural resource management groups, local shires, agricultural industries, catchment group members, land owners and managers contribute significantly to this process.
- Expert anecdotal information and data are incorporatedto enhance the dataset.
- Viewing the draft land use map on a field laptop linked to a global positioning system (GPS) provides a real-time 'moving map' display to facilitate navigation to areas requiring checking.
- Satellite imagery can also be viewed on the laptop, and used to assist with navigation and mapping.
- Field edits can be entered directly and a new coverage generated for incorporation into the map.
- A strong relationship between satellite imagery and the 'real world' can thus be formulated, and this will assist with subsequent interpretation.
- Geographic information system (GIS) procedures are then followed to ensure that the data meets required spatial and attribute standards.
