RedFlow Energy Pty Ltd
Zinc bromine battery for RAPS system
QSEIF Funding: $216,000
Project date: 2004–2005
Project details
RedFlow Energy aimed to develop a zinc-bromine battery for use in remote area power systems (as a direct replacement for lead-acid batteries), using a novel technology to bond the polymer battery components.
About the technology
The end product is cheaper than lead acid batteries, uses no heavy metals and has a greater ability to store power, making it particularly useful for homes and small offices that generate power from renewable resources.
Project status
Since developing the battery, RedFlow has gone from strength to strength. The company has grown from small team of two working out of a small suburban shed to a workforce of 74 occupying a factory in the Brisbane suburb of Seventeen Mile Rocks and now exports its batteries to an international market.
RedFlow was floated on the Australian Stock Exchange at the end of November 2010 and within a month their share price had grown by almost 45%.
In 2008, RedFlow received the Queensland Government’s ‘Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award’.
