Poly Optics

Fibre optic lighting system for refrigeration cabinets

QSEIF Funding: $150,000

Project dates: 2001

Project details

Poly Optics developed an energy-efficient lighting system for commercial refrigeration and drinks cabinets, by adapting light-emitting diode (LED) and fibre optic lighting technology.

About the technology

With QSEIF funding Poly Optics redesigned their fibre optic cable to be more flexible. They then coupled this cable with the latest LED technology to create a commercial refrigerator lamp that uses a single 10 watt LED yet produces 500 lumens of light.

This refrigerator lamp has a longer life and uses half the power of a standard fluorescent lamp yet produces an equivalent light output and ambience. Poly Optics’ refrigerator lamp also produces less heat which reduces the overall power consumption by nearly a third.

Project status

Poly Optics is currently trialing the refrigeration light and hopes to trial it in a supermarket.
