Background

DERM is currently considering a proposal to name an unnamed lagoon within the Ipswich City Council.

The proposed Railway Lagoon is located adjacent to Grandchester Park within the Grandchester township. The feature has permanent water and is approximately 200 metres in length.

An internet search has revealed the Grandchester State School site, reporting that explorer Allan Cunningham camped beside what is known locally as ‘Railway Lagoon’, whilst searching for the source of the Brisbane River in 1829.

An historical map search within the department has revealed that the lagoon was in existence in 1891 and clearly shown in Portion 20, Parish of Alford.

The name Railway Lagoon probably originates from its close proximity to the Grandchester Railway Station on the Main Line Railway. Grandchester Station is located only 300 metres north of the lagoon and the adjoining Grandchester Park was formally Railway Reserve.
