Background

DERM is currently considering a proposal to formally name an unnamed waterfall as Kinbombi Falls. The waterfall is located about four kilometres south-east of Kinbombi township at a Water Reserve on Kinbombi Creek and signposted as ’Kinbombi Falls’.

The origin of the name Kinbombi Falls is derived from the local Aboriginal people’s language. Kinbombi or Gin-bumbi is referenced in the Dictionary of the Gubbi-Gubbi and Butchulla Languages by Jeanie Bell (1994) on page 164 as meaning ‘fight about a woman’.

The waterfall appears to be a well known feature throughout the district and is listed on several internet sites including Gympie Cooloola Tourism and Bonzle Digital Atlas of Australia <www.bonzle.com>.

The 1:25 000 Topographical Map 9345-42 references Kinbombi Falls as an unofficial name.

Water Reserve R155 (County of Lennox) on Title reference 49006644 refers to the local name known as Kinbombi Falls.
