Background
The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is currently considering a proposal to formally name an unnamed mountain as Mount Grey, and two unnamed gullies as Greys Gully and Rices Gully located at Mount Mort.
Greys Gully and Rices Gully are signposted at the points they cross Greys Plains Road. Both features rise high in the Proctor Range and flow north for about six or seven kilometres until their confluence with Franklin Vale Creek.
The origin of the name Greys Gully is unknown. However, historical survey plan CH31522 (1872) refers to a section of the lands as being known as Gray’s Plains. This may be the origin for the naming of Greys Plains Road.
Rices Gully flows through a large property which was once owned and farmed by the Rice family, who were well known throughout the district. An historical title search has revealed that Joseph Rice acquired Portion 79 (639 acres), Parish of Franklin in 1876 and the property was held in the Rice family name until 1965. It is proposed to formally name this gully in honour of the pioneering Rice family.
During preliminary consultation with the Ipswich City Council into the naming of the two gullies, Councillor David Pahlke raised another place name concern from a long-time local resident. The feature identified is a mountain, known locally as Mount Grey, which had never been formally recognised.
As this feature is in close proximity to Greys Gully and Rices Gully, it is proposed to include Mount Grey with this proposal. The correct spelling as Grey (not Gray) has been confirmed by local residents, as recorded on historical survey plan CH31522.
