Hints on paper size
If you select paper size (e.g. A3 or A4) for your SmartMap based on the limitations of your printer, the following will be of interest.
Because Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 5 (or later) allows a selected area of a SmartMap PDF to be printed, you can select a paper size larger than A4 or A3 for your map, then print a selected area of this larger SmartMap to your A4 or A3 printer.
This is better value for money because an A2 SmartMap is the equivalent of four A4 maps, yet costs significantly less.
The examples below show how paper size influences the amount of data that is displayed, even though the scale is constant at 1:1500 for all the maps.
- A4 Paper Size (PDF, 44K)*
- A3 Paper Size (PDF, 41K)* Contains two A4 SmartMaps
- A2 Paper Size (PDF, 53K)* Contains four A4 SmartMaps
- A1 Paper Size (PDF, 85K)* Contains eight A4 SmartMaps
- A0 Paper Size (PDF, 138K)* Contains sixteen A4 SmartMaps
Print the selected area of a SmartMap larger than A4 or A3 as follows—depending on the version of Acrobat Reader you have installed, some of the steps may vary slightly:
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader
- Select the Graphics Select Tool (Ver 5) or Snapshot Tool (Ver 6 or greater).

- Click and drag to define the required area for printing; select the Print button.
- Select the paper size required from Properties
- On the preview screen, see how the selected area will display on a page of the size selected.
- Depending on the version of Acrobat installed, shrink or expand the page to the paper size required.
- Select the Shrink or Expand option and the data displayed in the print preview changes accordingly (Note: The scale is not true for the selected area if it is made to fit to a paper size)
- Select the appropriate option and select OK to print
- To print a different area of the map, select the Graphics or Snapsot Tool again and repeat the above steps.
