Overview of digital data and product licences
There are different licence options available to support different customer needs. For any particular data or product, not all options are applicable. Product information sheets are available for each licence type, as well as sample licences.
Reseller
(Allows resale in unchanged form)
Product distributor
- Single organisational licence to distribute a range of published/physical departmental products (eg. selected maps, publications, photographic products and CD products).
- Charges—product fees with wholesale or resale discounts available.
Data distributor
- Single organisational licence to distribute one or multiple digital datasets supplied by the department.
- Digital data is provided in bulk form.
- Can distribute subsets of data supplied.
- Cannot use the data supplied by the department to create other products or use the data supplied by the department for own internal business purposes.
- Charges—an annual data distributor Licence Fee paid in advance; a Royalty Fee on sales of distributed data paid quarterly in arrears (a minimum annual Royalty Fee per data set applies).
Online distributor
- Single organisational licence to distribute a range of online Information Products offered by the department.
- Online distributor orders products via real-time online link to departmental databases.
- Charges—an Establishment Fee; a monthly Access Fee; and Information Product Fees.
Product creation
(Allows creation of products and their distribution)
Open
- Data Licensed to create or distribute hardcopy or digital products from one or more datasets supplied by the Department.
- Distribution of the licensed data supplied by the department is not permitted.
- Data able to be used for own use
- Charges:
- An access fee is charged to acquire the data
- For some datasets an annual licence fee and/or royalty fee will be payable.
- Depending on the dataset, a royalty fee may be charged based on a specific use in advance or based on 20% of customers tax invoice paid quarterly in arrears.
Reciprocal data sharing
(Allows for data sharing, creation and distribution of created products)
Data sharing
- Single organisational licence that can involve multiple datasets.
- The department will only offer this licence type where mutual benefit exists and provided there is a business reason to do so.
- Products created from the shared data are owned by and can be distributed by the organisation creating the product(s).
- Distribution of supplied data is not permitted except where special conditions apply.
- Charges—data provided at sharer party’s own expense.
