Built Environment Award

Energex

With more than 85 years’ industry experience, Energex is a government-owned corporation that provides network services and infrastructure to distribute electricity into the homes and businesses of 2.8 million people in south-east Queensland.  In 1997, Energex was the first energy company to join the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Challenge and continues to offset its carbon emission through tree planting.  Energex's commitment to sustainability is evident through its Energex Sustainability and Environment Fund (ESEF) a community partnership program wholly funded by the sale of scrap metal and other materials.

At Energex one of our most significant challenges is delivering sustainable outcomes in a challenging environment.  Meeting the needs of an increasingly power-hungry society at a time of heightened community expectation for social and environmental responsibility is a balancing act, but I am confident we are making progress towards achieving mutually acceptable outcomes.

Business Eco-efficiency Award

Carlton and United Brewers

Carlton United Brewers continues to lead in sustainable business practices, in particular at Yatala Brewery in South East Queensland. The site prides itself on water efficient brewing, using just over two litres of water for every litre of beer made – around half the amount used by some leading international brewers. Recycled water is used throughout the brewery wherever possible. An on-site water treatment facility delivers water cost savings along with reductions to CO2 emissions, salt and discharge levels and consumption of cleaning chemicals at the Yatala Brewery.

Corporate Award

SEQ Catchments

SEQ Catchments is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation helping to build a sustainable community that cares for and values the natural resources and biodiversity of South East Queensland, and that recognises the impact of personal and collective actions on the environment.

Mobilising and involving the community is a key action to set local and regional priorities that address environmental issues and identify projects and partnerships to deliver tangible, on-ground solutions.

We generate government and business investment into these community-driven programs and implement and manage these projects to completion.

SEQ Catchments works closely with the Queensland and Local Government to promote a balanced, long term approach to land development, infrastructure planning and economic growth, via the award winning SEQ Natural Resource Management Plan.

Waste Avoidance and Resource Efficiency

The Queensland Government is keen to promote innovation in waste management and resource recovery. Many companies are overhauling practices and changing attitudes to traditional waste operations, and these awards showcase the work of these technical and commercial leaders. Trailblazers can show how many other businesses can adapt and improve, no matter in which sector they operate. Coles has recently launched Coles Community Food with SecondBite, a national program which is committed to donating surplus healthy, fresh produce to charities and community groups around the country, providing over 5 million meals to people in need over the coming two years. Coles stores are now donating fresh produce and bakery items to local community food programs in both metropolitan and regional communities to assist the estimated 1.2 million Australians who don’t have access to a safe, regular and affordable food supply. Through these endeavors Coles hope to build a sustainable future for their customers, their business and the environment.
