Zoning plans

A zoning plan is the principal tool used for managing a marine park. The aim of a zoning plan is to clearly indicate the types of activities that are acceptable in different areas or 'zones' identified within a marine park.

The Marine Park Regulation 2006 or the marine park zoning plan will usually state the objectives for each zone. The zoning plan for each marine park identifies the different zones within a marine park and lists the activities that can continue unrestricted in each zone, those that can occur with a permit and those that are prohibited. Designated areas can also form part of a zoning plan and allow for special management at specific locations.

Zones have different levels of protection. Most zones allow a wide range of uses, including fishing and boating. Certain activities are prohibited in only a few zones.

Zoning plan information guides show the different zones by using colours on zoning plan maps. Activities tables show what you can and cannot do in a particular zone.

Zoning plans are legally enforceable because they are subordinate legislation. Penalties apply for breaches.

Zoning plans for the Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park, Great Sandy Marine Park, and Moreton Bay Marine Park can be accessed from the Office of Parliamentary Counsel web site. The zoning plan for the Moreton Bay Marine Park is currently being reviewed. Further information can be accessed from the Moreton Bay Marine Park zoning review.
