QPWS Master Plan

The consultation period for 'Naturally Queensland 2020—the Master Plan for protected areas, forests and wildlife' has now closed

Protected areas and forests are the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation in Queensland. However, they are not only important for conservation. They also provide a place for people to visit and reconnect with nature—a place for fun, family time and the healthy outdoor lifestyle that is a special feature of life in Australia.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is charged with protecting these important natural assets, as well as the irreplaceable wildlife that lives alongside us and shares the environment we all depend on.

For the past 10 years the 2001 Master Plan for Queensland’s parks system has provided the blueprint for protected area management in Queensland. It helps guide the way QPWS manages national parks to protect natural and cultural values.

The Master Plan is being updated to reflect the challenges and opportunities that QPWS will face over the next 10 years. It will address all aspects of QPWS business, including protected areas on land and sea, as well as forests and wildlife.

A draft Master Plan was released for public comment in July 2011. The consultation period closed in November 2011. Thank you to those who submitted comments, these will be considered during the development of the final version.
