Forest Transfer processes in Queensland
Bulburin Forest Reserve
Forest transfer processes in Queensland are underpinned by the Queensland Government's commitments to the following:
Statewide Forests Process
The Statewide Forests Process (SFP) is progressively pursuing long-term forest management solutions of Queensland’s State forests. It is current government policy that native forest logging in State forests be phased out in favour of a plantation-based industry. The State forests would then be transferred to the protected area estate for nature conservation. Transfers under the SFP generally relate to areas not initially addressed under the South East Queensland Forest Agreement (SEQFA) or the Wet Tropics Forest Transfer.
Forest transfer regions occurring under the SFP include:
- Western Hardwoods and Cypress Region
- North Queensland Ecotone
- Mackay / Proserpine Region, and
- Rockhampton Region
These regions are shown on the following map:

The conversion of State forests to protected area directly contributes to the Government’s commitments to protect Queensland’s biodiversity and to increase the state’s total area of lands protected for conservation purposes to 20 million hectares by 2020.
Forest transfers under the SFP are similar to the SEQFA and Wet Tropics Forest Transfer in that State forest areas will be progressively dedicated protected area via the forest reserve holding tenure, to allow time for an assessment of proposed future tenures to be made.
Updates on national park gazettals and the progress made in each of the forest transfer programs is located on the Protected area gazettals update webpage.
