Environment and Resource Management

Commercial activities

A variety of commercial opportunities is available for each Great Walk. Opportunities range from short, guided walks to extended, safari-style expeditions or transportation of independent walkers to and from the walks.

Commercial access rights will be allocated through a publicly advertised expression of interest process prior to the opening of each Great Walk. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will seek proposals that are nature-based, ecologically sustainable and that contribute to the conservation and presentation of the park's natural and cultural values. Operators should demonstrate their environmental awareness, sensitivity to nature conservation, and experience in the management and promotion of nature-based tourism operations.

Successful tour operators will initially be granted a three-year commercial access license and will be allowed to display the official Great Walks branding in promotional material. In return for the benefits associated with commercial access rights, licensed tour operators will be required to make financial contributions toward the cost of managing the Great Walk for which they have a permit.

Expressions of interest will be advertised in local regional newspapers and The Courier-Mail. Information packages will be available which show the features of the Great Walk, any site limitations and details of the application and assessment process to be used to evaluate proposals. In general, each submission should detail proposed activities and the proponent's ability to develop and sustain the operation, and should demonstrate the proponent's strong environmental management capability.
