Great Walks

About Great Walks of Queensland
Some of Queensland's best natural areas are yours to explore on the Great Walks of Queensland.
Glorious beaches, spectacular geological formations, crystal clear lagoons, ancient rainforests and rich indigenous culture are just some of the treasures you can discover.
The Great Walks of Queensland is a $16.5 million and 10 year Queensland Government initiative to create a world-class system of walking tracks throughout the very best of Queensland’s protected area estate, including four of our five magnificent World Heritage Areas.
Each of the Great Walks of Queensland offers a range of experiences, from short, easy strolls to half and full-day walks and extended overnight adventures. This mix ensures that people of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to explore, experience and enjoy Queensland's parks and forests.
Six Great Walks were opened as part of the first $10 million funding round. These were:
- Fraser Island
- Gold Coast Hinterland
- Mackay Highlands
- Sunshine Coast Hinterland
- Wet Tropics
- Whitsunday
The current $6.5 million program will see four more Great Walks constructed and opened by mid 2010.
The first of the four more Great Walks — Carnarvon Great Walk, was officially opened to visitors on schedule on the 28 July 2009.
Three more Great Walks are currently being constructed and are due for completion by the end of 2009 and mid 2010.
