Camping bookings
Free camping weekend
To encourage family participation in outdoor activities, the draft Naturally Queensland 2020—The Master Plan for protected areas, forests and wildlife recommends that for one weekend, commencing in 2012, selected national park and forest campgrounds may be open to the public, free of charge.
Subject to community consultation and acceptance of this proposal, campers will be notified of the free weekend and will be able to book in advance.
Please note that this opportunity will not be available until mid 2012.
Before camping in a park, forest or similar reserve, you must obtain a camping permit and pay your camping fees.
Most camping areas can be booked online, by visiting an over-the-counter booking office or by phone. You must pay your camping fees to secure your booking.
- Book online
- Book over-the-counter
- Book by phone on 13 QGOV (13 74 68)
Some camping areas are heavily booked, especially on public holidays and school holidays. Book early—depending on the camping area you can book from three to 12 months in advance of your planned visit. Booking at least six weeks in advance is recommended.
Booking number and permit tags
You will receive a booking number confirming that your camping permit has been booked and paid for. The ranger will use this number to confirm your stay at the camping area.
An online permit tag will be issued at the time of booking receipt, you can print this tag and display as outlined on the tag. If you are unable to obtain an online permit tag you can collect one from nominated over-the-counter camping and vehicle access permit booking offices or from the information shelters at most parks or forests.
Camping tags and vehicle stickers are not automatically posted out to you.
Self-registration
At some parks and forests, you can pay your fees at a self-registration shelter. Self-registration and on-site payment of camping fees is used in parks and forests where camper numbers are usually low (less than 40 per cent of campground capacity) and where online or phone bookings do not meet visitor needs. Permits may also be available by self-registration at popular campgrounds during off-peak times. Be sure to check if the park or forest you plan to visit has self-registration available before arrival.
Under the self-registration system you write out your own permit. Include your camping fees (cash, cheque or credit card details) and place it in the secure box at the self-registration station in the camping area. Where self-registration is available, signs will indicate how to obtain a permit and what fees apply.
Pre-paid camping credits
Camping credits allow frequent or nomadic campers an easier way to pay for camping. By buying camping credits in advance you can pay for online or self-registration camp sites on the road without providing credit card or personal details for each booking.
You can buy your camping credits online, by visiting an over-the-counter booking office or by phoning 13 QGOV (13 74 68). Credits can be used to pay for online and self-registration camping permits and also vehicle access permits. They are valid for 12 months and credits unused at the end of this time are forfeited.
Camping credits do not guarantee or reserve a place at camping areas, as bookings are subject to availability. Customers with credits must have a valid camping permit before setting up camp.
Note: Credits cannot be used for camping at Great Walk camp sites.
Alterations and cancellations
Bookings may be altered, subject to availability, if sufficient notice is given. Bookings can be cancelled but you may not be entitled to a refund. To find out more, download the refund operational policy (PDF, 66K)*.
