Photos from the population study
The Fraser Island dingo photo gallery features photographs taken during the Fraser Island dingo population study. This photo was taken in November, 2009. Photo: DERM
Welcome to the Fraser Island dingo photo gallery. It shows photo records taken as part of the dingo population study as well as day-to-day management. It is important to note that the study involves a multi-staged approach, including satellite tracking, scat collection and analysis, and prey habitat assessments.
The photo gallery has been arranged by the month in which the photographs were taken. The number of sightings fluctuated as dingoes moved through their yearly cycles. For example, events such as pupping and whelping stages (generally from the end of April until November) often resulted in reduced dingo activity in high visitation areas. These months did not yield many photographs as the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers do not disturb the packs too much when the dingoes are fending for their pups, when the pups whelp or when females are lactating.

Dingo population estimates
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service undertakes constant monitoring of the dingo population on Fraser Island. The dingo management strategy (PDF, 266K)* underpins these monitoring activities. In 2009, the Queensland Government initiated the development and implementation of an extensive Fraser Island Dingo Population Study. This study, to be conducted over a two-year period, commenced in November 2009.
The results from the Fraser Island dingo population study stage 1 (PDF, 1.8M)* strongly suggest a current population in excess of 200 individuals on Fraser Island (a landmass of 166,000 ha).
Projections indicate that dingo numbers vary depending on the seasons; increasing after breeding and subsequently declining due to natural attrition. Generally, a pack consists of up to 12 animals, but total dingo numbers and pack sizes again vary across seasons and years in line with the supply of vacant territories and natural food sources.
