Camping in Mount Moffat section, Carnarvon National Park
Mount Moffatt has four camping areas catering for a range of experiences from walk-in camping to camper trailers and off-road caravans. You can also bush camp in the remote sections of the park.
Camping permits are required and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite.
Park-specific conditions
During school holidays, campsites must be booked in advance.
Camping permits can only be extended online. There are online booking facilities at the Roma and Mitchell tourist information centres. The QPWS Mount Moffatt office does not have online facilities.

Dargonelly Rock Hole camping area
Campground features: Semi-open area beside a permanent rock hole in Marlong Creek.
Location: 3 km north of the mail boxes beside Marlong Creek.
Access: The campground is accessible to conventional vehicles in dry weather. It is accessible for camper trailers and off-road caravans or buses. This is the only camping area where large buses are permitted.
Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites.
Restrictions in place in this area include:
- A maximum of 35 people in the area at any one time.
- A maximum group size of 6 people.
- A maximum of 7 groups in the area at any one time.
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, off-road caravans or buses and camper trailers.
Campsite surface: Dirt, grass.
Facilities: One pit toilet, communal fire rings and water (treat before drinking). Water supplies are limited and should be used for drinking and cooking only.
Open fires: Permitted in fire rings only, except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves are recommended.
Generators: Permitted in daylight hours only and with other campers' consent. Small, silenced, portable 1000 watt generators only.

West Branch camping area
Campground features: Semi-open area near the west branch of the Maranoa River.
Location: 9 km north-east of the QPWS park office.
Access: The camping area is accessible to conventional vehicles in dry weather, camper trailers and off-road caravans. It is not accessible to buses.
Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites.
Restrictions in place in this area include:
- A maximum of 30 people in the area at any one time.
- A maximum group size of 6 people.
- A maximum of 6 groups in the area at any one time.
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, off-road caravans, camper trailers and large groups.
Campsite surface: Dirt, grass.
Facilities: A pit toilet, communal fire rings, and water (treat before drinking). Water supplies are limited and should be used for drinking and cooking only.
Open fires: Permitted in fire rings only, except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves recommended.

Campground features: Semi-open area beside the east branch of the Maranoa River.
Location: 15 km east of the airstrip.
Access: The camping area is accessible by 4WD only. It is accessible for high clearance camper trailers.
Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites.
Restrictions in place in this area include:
- A maximum of 20 people in the area at any one time.
- A maximum group size of 6 people.
- A maximum of 5 groups in the area at any one time.
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping and camper trailers.
Campsite surface: Dirt, grass.
Facilities: A pit toilet and communal fire rings.
Open fires: Permitted in fire rings only, except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves recommended.
Generators: Not permitted.

Rotary Shelter Shed camping area
Location: About 17 km north-east of the QPWS park office.
Access: The camping area is accessible by 4WD only. It is accessible for high clearance camper trailers.
Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites.
Restrictions in place in this area include:
- A maximum of 15 people in the area at any one time.
- A maximum group size of 6 people.
- A maximum of 4 groups in the area at any one time.
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, walk-in camping, and camper trailers.
Campsite surface: Dirt, grass.
Facilities: A picnic shelter, pit toilet, wood barbecues and water (treat before drinking). Water is limited and should be used for cooking and drinking only.
Open fires: Permitted in the barbecues provided except when fire bans or prohibitions apply. Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Do not bring in or collect bush wood. Fuel stoves recommended.
Generators: Not permitted.

Bush camping
Location: All of Carnarvon National Park, except in restricted access areas. People planning to walk and camp in remote sections of the park should have bushwalking and navigation experience, and should have an emergency plan worked out with a responsible friend or family member.
Access: Walk-in only.
Number of sites: No allocated sites. Your group should have at least 2 people. Maximum group size is 6.
Campsites are suitable for: walk-in camping, small groups.
Campsite surface: Sand, dirt, grass.
Facilities: None.
Open fires: Prohibited. Fuel stoves only.
Generators: Not permitted.
Essentials to bring: Drinking water, rubbish bags, fuel stove, first-aid kit and topographic map. A hand-held UHF radio or personal EPIRB and a GPS are also recommended. Always carry extra water and boil any local water before use. Do not rely on creeks for water, as they are not always flowing and the water is not suitable for drinking.
