Significant Australian Events from 1901 to 1920

1901

The Commonwealth of Australia was borne on 1 January.

Queen Victoria's death saw the inauguration of King Edward VII to the throne.

First Federal election was held and the inaugural Commonwealth parliament opened.

The new Australian flag was hoisted for the first time.

1909

The federal Capital Territory was determined. It was named Canberra in 1913.

1912

Walter Burley Griffin won a national design competition for the Federal capital.

1914

Australia entered the First World War after Britain declared war on Germany.

1915

The ANZACS landed at Gallipoli.

1917

Railway between South Australia and Perth completed the Trans-Australian Railway.

1918

World War I ended. Nearly 60,000 Australians had been killed and 226,000 wounded.

1919

12,000 people died as a result of an influenza outbreak.
