1881
First census of all Australian colonies gave the non indigenous population as 2.25 million.
1889
A railway with different gauges linking Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane was completed.
1897
Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years as monarchy).
1898
Victorian, Tasmanian and South Australian inhabitants voted 'yes' in a referendum for Federation of Australia.
1899
A second referendum saw New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia vote for Federation.
Colonial troops were sent to South Africa to aid British troops fighting in the Boer War.
1900
Western Australia voted in favour for Federation of the colonies.
Lord Hopetoun was appointed first Governor-General.
Lord Hopetoun appointed Edmund Barton as the first Prime Minister of the new Australia.
