Significant Queensland Events 1860 to 1880

Events depicted here are meant only to capture a time relationship of general Queensland history with surveying and mapping events of the same time period portrayed on this site. 

 

1860

Queensland issued its first stamps; a penny red, a twopenny blue and a sixpenny green.

1861

Brisbane, Ipswich and Toowoomba were connected by telegraph. Later that year, Brisbane and Sydney were connected.

The Brisbane Courier became Queensland's first daily newspaper.

1863

The first labourers were imported from the Pacific islands through dodgy dealings, to work in the sugar cane fields and cotton plantations. They were known as Kanakas.

1865

Cobb and Co coaches extended business into Queensland.

1867

The first major gold discovery in Queensland - by James Nash at Gympie.

The first railway in Queensland, between Ipswich and Toowoomba, was completed. Queensland opted for a narrow gauge of 3 feet 6 inches.

1872

The Queensland National Bank was established.  It was the first institution to have its head office in Queensland.

The vote was given to men only in Queensland
