Significant Australian Events from 1860 to 1880

1861

Telegraph lines linked the towns of Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The first Melbourne Cup was run, won by Archer.

1862

John McDowall Stuart explored the centre of the continent from Adelaide to the north coast.

The first cricket match between Australia and England was played in Melbourne.

1868

The last convict transportation to Australia. The final boatload docked in Fremantle aboard the Hougermont.

1870

British forces were withdrawn from the colonies.

1872

The construction of the Overland Telegraph from Port Augusta to Darwin was completed.

1873

Ayers Rock was discovered and named after the Premier of South Australia.

1877

The telegraph line from Adelaide to Perth was completed.

1880

Bushranger hero Ned Kelly was hanged in Melbourne.
