Significant Queensland Events 1843 to 1859

Events depicted here are meant only to capture a time relationship of general Queensland history with surveying and mapping events of the same time period portrayed on this site. 

 

1844 to 1848

Ludwig Leichhardt and Edmund Kennedy separately traversed much of central and northern Queensland. They discovered the Warrego, Barcoo, Thomson and Dawson Rivers.

1846

Major Mitchell's explorations of fertile lands west to the Belyando River in western Queensland became known as the Maranoa District.

The Moreton Bay Courier was first published, constituting a four page tabloid.

1848

Ludwig Leichhardt and his party vanished in their second attempt to cross the continent from east to west.

1850

Brisbane's first bank opened, a branch of the Bank of New South Wales.

1859

The new colony of Queensland separated from NSW. The Order-in-Council, signed by Queen Victoria and coming into force on 6 June, allowed for the legal formation of a new Parliament in the colony. It comprised of a Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly.

The population of Queensland was about 28 000, of which 6 000 were located in the capital Brisbane, 3 500 in Ipswich, 1 000 in Toowoomba and 700 in Rockhampton.
