Significant Australian Events From 1843 to 1859

1846

Charles Sturt's party returned to Adelaide after exploring the inland to determine whether an inland sea existed.

1847

Melbourne was proclaimed a city, but not officially recognised until the following year.

1850

Work began on Australia's first railway line, connecting Sydney town and Parramatta.

1851

The colony of Victoria seceded from New South Wales. The Colony was previously known as Port Phillip District.

Gold was discovered in New South Wales and Victoria

1852

Australia's first university was founded, the University of Sydney.

1853

The Cobb and Co coach service began operations

1854

Attack of the Eureka Stockade at Ballarat, Victoria – a rebellion by gold miners.

1855

An inaugural self-governing parliament was created.

Van Diemen's Land was proclaimed a separate colony and officially named Tasmania.

1858

The Torrens System for Real Property was introduced in South Australia, later adopted by all the other colonies.

The first successful balloon ascent was made in Melbourne.
