1825

Van Diemens Land gained independence from New South Wales under the leadership of Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur.

1827

James Stirling explored the Swan River, Western Australia.

1829

Captain Fremantle took possession of the western third of Australia for the British Government.

A new colony named Western Australia was proclaimed.

1831

Emigration to Australia was promoted in England with the establishment of the Emigration Commission.

1835

A public land route was established between Sydney and Port Phillip.

1836

A new colony named South Australia was proclaimed.

1839

John Lort Stokes, captaining the Beagle, charted and named Port Darwin.

1842

Sydney and Melbourne were proclaimed towns.
