Pest animals include terrestrial and aquatic animal life with characteristics that are regarded as unwanted. It is possible for an animal to be considered a pest in some circumstances but not others. An animal is a pest if in a given situation it is known to cause one or more of the following outcomes:
- Has a negative impact on primary or other production;
- Has a negative impact on human health or safety;
- Directly reduces the sustainability of native flora or fauna populations or the resources upon which these depend; and/or
- Creates a nuisance that reduces the quality of life for a community.
Prevention and integrated control measures are very important to minimise the social, economic and environmental impacts of pests.
