Increased greenhouse gas emissions
Common greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and sulfur hexafluoride. Greenhouse gases are a component of the atmosphere that absorb heat and warm the atmosphere. This process is commonly known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring process that has been increased through human activity. It is believed that this enhanced greenhouse effect has and will continue to contribute to global climate change. Some key sources of greenhouse gas emission in Queensland include: land clearing, electricity generation, motor vehicle emissions, agricultural livestock emissions and industrial processes. At a property level change in greenhouse gas emissions can be monitored by measuring activities that result in greenhouse gas emissions.
Suggested indicator: Energy use*
Increased greenhouse gas emission may be associated with:
- Enhanced greenhouse effect, which could result in:
- warmer temperatures
- rising sea levels
- changes in rainfall patterns
- increased storm and cyclone intensity.
