DERM proposing to name eleven Kenilworth features
13 January 2012
A number of geographical features in the Kenilworth area may soon be formally named.
The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is inviting the public to comment on a proposal to officially name eleven geographical features in accordance with the Place Names Act 1994.
Regional Services Director, South East Region, Randall Hart said the proposed names are Weaning Paddock Hill, Beacon Hill, Moons Hill, Murtaghs Hill, Beattie Creek, Bofingers Crossing, Kuchs Crossing, Kenilworth Bluff, Hinka Booma Flats, Hugh Cochrane Lookout and Mary River Lookout.
“The Kenilworth and District Historical Society originally lodged a submission to formally name an unnamed hill as Weaning Paddock Hill,” Mr Hart said.
“However, when DERM officers were assessing the application they discovered a further ten unnamed geographical features nearby. These names have been added to the original proposal.”
DERM is seeking comment from the traditional owners, indigenous groups, local historians, historical societies and other community groups to ensure the state’s local history and cultural significance is maintained.
Queensland place name plan QPN1207, illustrating the location of the eleven geographical features, is available for public inspection at the DERM Business Centre, 52-64 Currie Street, Nambour; the Kenilworth Library, Elizabeth Street, Kenilworth and at the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Eddie De Vere Building, corner Currie and Bury Streets, Nambour.
Copies of the proposal plan can also be downloaded from Queensland Place Names at www.derm.qld.gov.au
Individual submissions, in writing, in support of the proposal or against the proposal, may be lodged with the Regional Services Director, South East Region, Department of Environment and Resource Management, PO Box 573, Nambour Qld 4560 until 16 March 2012.
