Hook Point Road re-opens

Hook Point Road on Fraser Island is due to re-open as of 8am tomorrow (2 October), however drivers are urged to exercise caution and be alert for possible hazards.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Regional Manager Rob Allan said the road had been closed for the past week due to a large wildfire.

“The fire which started last Tuesday (22 September) is still burning, and several roads remain closed, including Dillinghams Road and sections of Southern and Birrabeen Roads,” Mr Allan said.

“The Southern Lakes Scenic Drive is only accessible north of Lake Boomanjin from Central Station.”

Mr Allan said QPWS crews had been working in shifts to contain the fire via back-burning and helicopter water bombing.

“Approximately 15,000 hectares of land has been burnt from Hook Point up to Dilli Village on the eastern side of the island, through to Bluff Creek on the western side,” Mr Allan said.

”Fire management is expected to continue. The wildfire is currently under control and is not currently threatening life and property.”

Mr Allan urged anyone on the island to ensure their safety by heeding advice about keeping clear of closed areas, obeying signage and following directions from Ranger staff, Police and Emergency Services personnel.
