Environment and Resource Management

Spatial information

The department is the lead agency for spatial information and is developing, administering and maintaining Queensland’s spatial reference framework and positioning infrastructure—supporting government and industry.

Queensland Spatial Information Council

The Queensland Spatial Information Council (QSIC) supports business, community and the environment by coordinating and streamlining spatial information infrastructure across the State.

QSIC facilitates and promotes a whole-of-industry approach to ensure spatial information is accessible and used in a way that supports industry, lifestyle and a sustainable environment across Queensland.

QSIC Support is a business unit based in the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) and implements the key strategies identified by QSIC to improve Queensland’s spatial resources. These strategies address awareness and understanding, data availability and access, collaboration and capacity building.

Permanent survey marks

Permanent survey marks are an important part of the State’s spatial information infrastructure and are reference points for surveyors and government. They help to identify property boundaries, as well as support road construction, the production of maps and mining activities.

Survey marks provide accurate longitude and latitude information, and complement the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (such as GPS) by surveyors.
