New partnership for wildlife care

DERM and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Queensland (RSPCA Qld) have entered into a new partnership agreement to improve wildlife rescue response and enhance support for the wildlife carer network.
From 1 September 2011, all calls relating to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife, including marine animal strandings, are being coordinated through RSPCA Qld’s 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) phone number.
The public is encouraged to call 1300 ANIMAL directly, however, callers who contact DERM will be automatically transferred to RSPCA Qld.
Combining resources with RSPCA Qld allows a more unified and coordinated approach to wildlife care. DERM will continue to facilitate wildlife rehabilitation by issuing permits to people who wish to become wildlife carers, while RSPCA Qld will direct more resources to public calls relating to orphaned, sick or injured wildlife. This will offer increased support for wildlife rescuers and carers through improved networking, communication and training opportunities.
Calls relating to crocodile sightings, sick, injured and orphaned cassowaries or a bat that has bitten or scratched a person should still be directed to DERM’s hotline 1300 130 372.
