Stock routes review
A review of Queensland's stock route network has been undertaken by a panel of stock route users and managers. The purpose of the review was to look at ways to improve the management and use of the stock route network to ensure it can be maintained to meet the future needs of the pastoral industry.
In 2008, a series of recommendations were made to the then Minister for Natural Resources and Water. Submissions for comment on these recommendations were open to the public until the end of August 2008. All submissions are being thoroughly considered before any decisions are being made on the implementation of any recommendations contained in the report.
Review paper
In July 2008 review paper (PDF, 139K)* was prepared by the department, now the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM), which provides an overview of the review and its findings. Recommendations made to the Minister include:
- reclassifying the stock route network
- revising the travel and agistment fee and permit structure
- introducing an Annual Grazing Agreement framework
- establishing a process whereby one single agency issues permissions to travel and graze stock
- the ownership of water infrastructure to remain with the department, (now DERM).
