Mooloolaba Spit Futures Plan
The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) has released the final Mooloolaba Spit Futures Plan (PDF, 3.2M)* which seeks to ensure a sustainable future and balanced use of the Mooloolaba Spit. The plan was developed jointly with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC).
The plan is the result of extensive consultation with residents, leaseholders, interest groups, state government agencies and local businesses.

The Mooloolaba Spit Futures Plan provides a framework for the ongoing enhancement of the Spit—while protecting the environment and lifestyles of the local community and the viability of local businesses.
The key components of the plan include:
- confirmation of the development controls over the spit in the SCRC planning scheme
- creation of a whole-of-government water-based services centre (at the eastern end of the Spit)
- relocation of Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol into the government centre when created and the current site will then be redeveloped as open space
- rationalisation of beach access within the existing residential precinct (to control erosion and degradation of the dunal systems)
- greater community access to the Spit with the creation of new bikeways and pedestrian corridors
- retention of the caravan park to provide affordable accommodation on the spit
- reconfiguration of the caravan park (minimising reduction of capacity) to enable better and safer access between the Spit, Mooloolaba Beach and the Esplanade.
