Environment and Resource Management

Recycle used oil

Each year in Australia about 100 million litres of waste oil goes unaccounted for. Installing adequate waste oil collection facilities and informing people about where those facilities are will be vital steps towards preventing this valuable resource continuing to be 'lost' each year.

The lack of appropriate oil collection infrastructure, particularly in remote and rural areas, has been identified as a significant impediment to recovering more waste oil. While many local Councils have identified the provision of collection facilities as a priority, in many cases the funds are simply not available to meet this need.

As a result, the Federal Government started the Product Stewardship for Oil program. This program works like a small grants program for local governments to provide oil collection and storage facilities in remote and rural areas. The department has formed a strategic partnership with the Federal Government to implement this program.

By following the links on this page, you can see how to correctly dispose of your used oil at one of these facilities, where your nearest used oil collection facilities are located, what some of the uses for recycled oil are and what some of its environmental impacts are.

Queensland Councils can click here to access documents they may find useful to help promote existing facilities and increase understanding of the benefits of recycling used oil among residents. Councils wanting additional information about the Product Stewardship for Oil program should contact the department directly.
