The Queensland waste and recycling report card 2007 provides a summary of waste generation, resource recovery and waste disposal in Queensland during the year ending June 2007. It draws on information provided by a range of organisations, including local governments and businesses in the waste management and resource recovery industry.
The state of waste and recycling in Queensland 2007 report provides clear and reproducible data on waste management in Queensland. This data is intended to inform local, State and Commonwealth Government decision makers, private sector waste managers, people conducting research on waste management and the general public. This technical report is an extension of the Queensland waste and recycling report card 2007.
Key Findings
- The department documented the generation of 15.8 million tonnes of solid waste by Queensland households and businesses during the 2006-07 financial year.
- Close to 38% of this waste (6 million tonnes) was recovered for reuse (diverted from landfill).
- 13% of waste generated is domestic waste. On average, each Queensland resident generates 270 kg of household waste and 61 kg of recyclable paper and packaging materials per year.
- There were high rates of resource recovery for segregated green waste (94%) and biosolids (sewage treatment residues - 89%). There were lower rates of recovery for commercial and industrial waste (57%), construction and demolition waste (30%) and waste collected from domestic premises (19%).
- Councils are reporting the generation of increasing amounts of domestic waste and commercial and industrial waste, varying amounts of construction and demolition waste, and a relatively stable amount of green waste (allowing for rainfall variations and extreme weather).
- The amount of paper and packaging materials collected by councils for recycling has risen from 169,000 tonnes in 2003-04 to 249,000 tonnes in 2006-07 (a 47% increase).
