Queensland’s Industry Waste Levy plans to cut waste to landfill in half by 2020. The waste levy will change the way Queensland businesses approach disposing of waste to landfill.

In order to help business to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, the following business support programs and tools have been developed.

New* reThink Business Waste Equipment rebate program

The reThink Business Waste Equipment (RBWE) program provides a rebate on the purchase of bin equipment and awareness raising material to help implement improved resource recovery systems in businesses. The RBWE rebate program is now open for applications. More information is available.

New* reThink Business Waste Services Program

The reThink Business Waste Services (RBWS) Program provides a $750 subsidy to businesses to help review existing waste management practices, identify actions and introduce a new resource recovery service. The RBWS Program is now open for applications. More information is available.

reThink Business Waste information sessions

In 2011 DERM worked with industry associations to hold information sessions across Queensland to help businesses to rethink their business waste. The partner organisations included the Building Designers Association of Queensland (BDAQ), Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ), Queensland Music Network (QMusic), Timber Qld, Housing Industry Association (HIA), National Retail Association Ltd (NRA), Queensland Newsagents Federation (QNF), Sunshine Coast Regional Council (in conjunction with the Noosa Biosphere Board, the Kawana Chamber of Commerce and the Mooloolaba TAFE), The Australian Industry Group (AIG), Bundaberg Regional Council, and EnviroIndustry Gold Coast.

Six steps to waste efficiency—online tools and information

The six steps to waste efficiency can help businesses get started with minimising their waste. It steps through topics such as measuring waste, identifying local waste and recycling service providers, sector case studies and implementing collection systems.

DERM has also developed a factsheet to help explain the reforms and outline available assistance (PDF, 702K)* (PDF, 702k)*.

Waste Busters for Business

The Waste Busters for Business Program will provide on the ground support for businesses to undertake waste assessments and find solutions to minimise their waste. This program will be available in 2012–13. To stay informed about the waste busters, sign up to the business information register.
