Waste characterisation survey
Ahead of the new waste reforms launched on 1 December 2011, a Waste Site Characterisation Survey was conducted across Queensland. The survey was aimed at identifying all waste facilities, including landfills and waste transfer stations, and their on-site operations, processes and infrastructure.
The survey was the state’s first comprehensive survey of waste facilities and operations.
The survey:
- provided data for the Queensland Waste Online Levy System
- provided a snapshot of waste disposal sites and waste transfer stations’ activities
- identified funding needs for waste disposal sites to be ‘levy ready’
- provides site activity information for future funded assistance program opportunities
- provides comparative information to benchmark waste management infrastructure
- provides an opportunity for councils to review their regional waste management infrastructure.
The study provided baseline data to help waste site operators introduce the levy on industrial waste going to landfill. The data can be used to compare and benchmark waste facilities against regional needs.
The quality of data collected was variable across the state and the report provides a greater understanding of not only infrastructure profiles, but also provides an opportunity to compare with other areas and increase the scope for greater regional collaboration.
The final report (PDF, 2.4M)* is now available.
