September 2009 – Energy

QWESTNet aims to bring together sustainable technology users and retailers in an informal environment.

Efficient Energy: giving your business the power to be green

Agenda (PDF, 88K)*

One of QWESTNet's largest forums was hosted at the RNA showgrounds on 18 September 2009 in partnership with the Australian Institute of Energy. Around 130 delegates were given a broad overview on the vast topic of 'Energy' and were given the chance to explore the Going Green Expo.

The day focused on a few key topics, including solar power, improving energy efficiency as well as some handy information on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and the Clean Energy Innovation Centre. The 'take-home' messages of the day included the concept of 'cost avoidance' through improved efficiency rather than 'cost saving' as a means of offsetting the future increased cost of electricity.

Dr Keith Watts, Watt Utilities

Keith explains what demand-side management of electricity use is and why, as prices for electricity are set to soar and energy conservation and greenhouse gas abatement have become major issues, end-users should be practising this form of energy management. Suggestions are made as to when it should be applied and how and where it should be applied. Who should do it, actions taken to date at all levels and results are also discussed.

John Moynihan, Ecolateral

As part of Boutique Projects, John designed and constructed a number of solar passive, well ventilated, fit for purpose, low energy demand homes. In this presentation, John provides the case study of one home that considered first design principals such as energy conservation and demand management.  The home has 2 kW monocrystaline roof integrated PVs which, over the past 7 years, has achieved significant energy savings for the owner.
