July 2009 – Building Green
QWESTNet aims to bring together sustainable technology users and retailers in an informal environment.
Building Green - what is the cost?
Agenda (PDF, 89K)*
On 8 July 2009 QWESTNet hosted a green building forum on the Sunshine Coast in partnership with the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation Sunshine Coast.
The underlying theme of the day was: building green is cost effective. Small budgets and urban spaces do not rule out green. In a climate where Government policy is changing and utility bills are on the rise, delegates heard how sustainable buildings yield dividends, not costs. On the day, three case studies demonstrated how Queenslanders have future-proofed their homes and work places by taking advantage of readily available sustainable design and technologies.

Aspiring to change is the first step needed to move an organisation towards sustainable buildings and technologies. The next step is to quantify the current environmental footprint, set objectives, and integrate strategies into the financial, cash flow and capital expenditure budgets of the business. This presentation will look at some innovative thinking in design and systems that has allowed businesses on the Sunshine Coast and further afield to produce a positive return on their investment in sustainability.

Its design seeks to expand the notion of what a sub-tropical workplace might be, offering both internal and external spaces for the occupants to use. The building uses a series of initiatives to minimise energy and water use, and to reduce the building's environmental footprint.

Liza Neil, 4Crg- Caloundra Community Climate Change Response Group
In late 2007, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council imported solar panels and sourced suppliers for 10 grid-connected systems to try to increase the market, and reduce the cost of household generated Solar Power. In conjunction with 4Crg, the first bulk-buy had been installed and oversubscribed with 968 further applications by May 2009. The process has driven down system costs and had unexpected educational and financial benefits for the households involved.
